An organization I volunteer for has an MTD Model 95184 14HP Riding Lawn Mower that I am trying to fix up. I got all the 'safety' interlocks to work and the engine running. The problem I now have is the transmission is supposed to be a '7 speed shift on the go' (per the dacals), but maybe has three slow speeds - the other shift positions don't seem to be doing anything. What type of transmission is in this thing.
I thought at first it was a hydrostatic, but is appears to something else. Any help would be appreciated. I think that MTD is about the same as the Bolens I bought used for my kids, last year. Needs a new front drive belt.Right that it is a variable speed pulley setup. Replaced that, the drive is good, but with the worn out front drive, the blades stop turning if you keep the deck too high.
Drop it down a bit and it will pull through the grass. My kid's is worn skinny in one spot, makes it try to jump the sheave.Bitch of these things is you got to drive the pulley off the motor shaft TO replace the damned thingSears Garden tractor, my own self, near 25 years old. Given some weight, would pull your house down. Just won't stop.Buy a new one tomorrow if they had a Garden Tractor that was the equivalent. Probably less than 50 bucks in repairs to it, so far.Cheers,George.
Yep, variable speed pulley system. I have a 12 1/2hp 38' MTD that I have had for 14 years. I call it my Baby Bushhog. I cut the grass on my property when it was 2' tall by going slow and taking half a cut. They use an idler pulley to change tension on the belt letting the VS pulley change size. It will also down shift under load. A very good system. As stated might be the belt, V S pulley stuck in one position or linkage. Should be simple, you should be able to take the inspection plate off in front of the seat and see the belt and pulleys.
Here is the follow-up to the original question - finally got time to take the mower apart. Turns out there were two problems:1 The drive belt coming off the engine was pretty worn and needed to be replaced.2 In the Variable Speed Pulley, the center floating 'flange' (can't think of a better name) was prevented in fully moving in one direction (High Speed) because some fibrous plant material had gotten wrapped around the shaft on which it slides and acted as a spacer. That mower goes so fast now, it is almost scary. Thanks to everyone for your inputs.
